"Fred (Yates) and I sat in the restaurant in Roussac. It is not one of the most sought after restaurants in France, thank God, but it is surely one of the friendliest and certainly the cheapest.. well, anyway, there we talked or, rather, I talked as Fred tucked away the food. Fred, of course, had done everything. A great deal. Several lifetimes worth of stuff. But to speak to him you would not imagine that he had really done very much at all, he always came across as just an ordinary chap."
"Later that day, in his little place in Rancon - a village nearby - we talked a little more. Fred - to my absolute delight having seen and liked one or two of my pictures (two of those here) - gave me some tips and a little advice and encouragement. And I honestly think I learned more then than I had in... god knows, for many years beforehand in any case!" "Well, beyond that, there is a lot to say but I shant say it. Fred and I actually painted together once or twice. We painted a church he adored. And a village scene or two. But our musings - his musings and my inanities - are ours and ours alone. Suffice to say, it was a very satisfying and rewarding experience." (RIP Fred - July 8th 2008. Much missed already).
